One of the best feelings of spring...
The garden is in. I wish the bulbs bloomed longer, but it was time to cut them down and get the veggie garden going. It feels good to have tomato plants, romaine, jalapeno & herbs from Berberian Farm in Northborough (plants starting at .50!) in our little garden plot. The work has begun. My Mother's Day rose bush is in a pot with some trailing vinca. The bright pink hanging geranium I found at Home Depot for $5 makes me smile, as do the perennials that are actually showing up (I'm always happily surprised when they do). Thank you to my little helpers, Caroline & Wesley. The garden is IN!
The garden story of the season is my chives. Remember the ice storm? I had my herb planter on the railing of our little deck. The wind from the storm knocked the planter on it's side on the deck floor. Winter's snow kept the planter buried. When the snow thawed I forgot about the planter since it was still too early to plant my herb garden. One day in March I looked out the kitchen door window and there was the chive plant growing sideways, but growing strong.
I picked the planter up and set it back on the railing, trimming it a couple times when chives were needed in the kitchen. Fresh cut chives smell so good! Today was the first day I attempted to arrange the planter. It has been overcast & it even rained once I got the garden in...nice, huh?! I wonder how long it will take for my chives to straighten up? Maybe a good dose of sunshine will do the trick. For now, I've got a trailing chive plant & now you know how you can grow one too:D.
I {heart} perennials, my plants that actually grow, my little garden of hope & work... HOMEGROWN, and SPRING.

Do you know that I have yet to EVER plant a veggie garden? Lots of great intentions though! Do you mostly do container gardening? We don't quite have space unless I moved a tree or two and plus our ground is literally rock. I'm impressed at your efforts:) How joyful it would be to have fresh cukes, spinach, tomatoes, & lettuce....hmmmm....new project?
You can do a lot in containers, shay (my fav. are salsa and herb containers). Last year 2 of our tomato plants were potted, all of our herbs are potted & I like to mix some flowers in there too like pansies and/or nastertium. Our veggie garden is SMALL...maybe 3x4. I can get canning tomatoes for cheap at a local farm, so I just planted romas and grape/cherry tomatoes. Carrots and green beans are my kids' favorite to pick and eat, so those went in the ground today. I think the green bean would be nice in a pot with a trellis for the vine to climb.
I have ideas for a more ambitious garden (www.squarefootgardening.com), but this year it's a "pick & eat" garden and an herb garden for us. It is fun though, and the kids really enjoy the garden too, so it makes it even more worthwhile.
Our garden is in, too, and sprouting good things right and left. I really want to post some pics, but I have to buy a new camera first! I have great garden helpers too. So fun!
Yea for spring! There's nothing that lifts my spirits more than sun and blossoms!
You are again an inspiration! I have plans for my garden, but waiting for John to build my squarefootgarden box. Can't wait!
Ours just went in, too. Here's to an abundant harvest!
