Our dream pet followed by a Caroline moment

Talk about a perfect pet situation.... the animal makes it's own home, finds it's own food, comes and goes as it pleases without disturbing the neighbors, leaves the yard in tact, makes beautiful music, teaches life lessons, AND goes off to make it on its own without animal control bringing it back to our doorstep. This is the kind of "pet" we got this spring.
A little over a month ago we noticed the beginnings of a nest under our backyard deck. Thomas got mischievous and knocked it over. That led to a lesson from Wayne on the fragility and importance of the nest that the mother robin was creating, as well as the importance of respecting the mother robin and the work she was putting forth to bring life into the world.  Sweet lesson learned.

We observed in awe as the mommy robin brought twig after twig, dried grass blades, pieces of this and that, and created nothing short of a miraculous sturdy nest.  Soon she laid 3 beautiful blue eggs.
She sat on her nest, every now and then running off for food. A few weeks ago the eggs hatched and 3 baby robins emerged. The mommy would bring the babies food and watch over them.

Last week the first baby robin flew from the nest.  Now the nest is empty.  The other night I fell asleep at 8pm....a rarity, and woke at 3:30am.  I thought, "That's what I get for going to bed at a decent hour!  I tried to go back to sleep, but oh my, the chirping that was going on in our backyard "forest!"  We have quite a crowd of robins and they make themselves known in the wee hours of the morning.

I love their chatter.  I thought of our 3 baby robins, now quite possibly part of the choir of chatter in our backyard, and how their little family made our spring all the more special.  I hope our baby robins are safe out there in the big world!

Noticing Caroline walk out the front door, I said, "Caroline, come inside!"  Caroline hollered back, "Just a minute, Mommy, I'm looking at the world.  Hello green grass!  Hello, petunias!  Hello, flowers that I don't know what your name is!  See you later!"  And she scurried inside.  Sweet Caroline makes me smile.

Those are my kind of pets. The birds are so loud here every morning (although I am at a loss as to where they hang out--our neighborhood has few trees) and I love them, sleep right through them most mornings, in fact, even with the slider in our bedroom open all the way. But as soon as the blasted neighborhood dogs are let out at 6, we are both scrambling out of bed to slam the door. Like I said, your bird pets sound delightful.

How sweet for your kids to have an experience like that! The only time I really notice the birds in the morning, is when I am at Girls Camp! Caroline is so precious.

Yes, my kind of pet too. We used to get nests all the time in our trees in Utah. It's so fun to experience their life cycles! Caroline is hillarious...I expected something like that out of Grace! Too fun.
