Halloween Dinner Party for kids

Halloween.  Much thanks to fellow bloggers who shared creative things they did with their kids for Halloween last year, I decided my timeout with Halloween is over. Seriously, some years we didn't even buy a pumpkin.  Every year I've put up  a few fall decorations, but not much if anything for Halloween unless the kids brought home artwork from school.  I'm over that slump.  We're going to have some silly fun with this silly (IMO) holiday, and prove it's never too late to start family traditions.
For starters, we'll have an Annual Halloween Dinner Party.  With cousin Mattie visiting this week, we upped our family Halloween dinner party to just a couple nights ago.  If we had really planned this well, the kids would have gotten a little more wear out of their costumes by wearing them to the dinner table.  We'll do that next time.

~~Here's the low down on our Halloween Dinner Party~~

Decor:  The kids made bat and jack 'o lantern silhouettes for our window- simply cut from black cardstock.
Menu:  Jack 'O Lanterns with Brains & Eyeballs- Orange peppers hollowed out and cut with a Pampered Chef V-cutting tool & a pairing knife, filled with whole wheat angel hair, and homemade meatball spaghetti sauce.  Pull the pasta through the eyes and mouth and put the top of the pepper back on top.
Bones- Breadstick dough with the ends tied in knots before baking.
Brain Cupcakes- Halloween Funfetti cupcakes with orange-colored vanilla frosting squeezed out of a Zip-loc bag in zig-zag form with 2 stripes down the middle of the cupcake to resemble a brain.

Very simple, the kids had a ball, and we've got something to build on in the coming years.  In fact, I'm up for calling this a run through in preparation for this coming Halloween.  We'll add carving pumpkins to our plans.  I also love the haunted house gingerbread houses.  I'd love to hear your ideas for Halloween-ish activities and food...I'll add them to our list of Halloween fun to choose from each year.
Happy Halloween!

After dinner, I painted the little girls' toes black with orange polka dots to match the pedi's Heather and I got on Wednesday.  Over at Sally's Beauty Supply they have mini nail polish in black and orange for 99c each.  I used the round end of a sewing pin to make the polka dots.  The girls love their Festive and Fun toes.

Cute traditions Becky. Every year we go, with my parents, to the pumpkin patch. This year we went to the Calabasas Pumpkin Festival. The kids had a blast. We also make Halloween decorations, put up our Halloween decorations the first week of September, make Halloween cookies and decorate the kids rooms with Halloween stuff. On Halloween Ben has been in school in years past. This is the first Halloween since we have had kids that he will be home. I'm not quite sure what we will do. In years past I have gone to my parents and they have trick or treated with me and the kids. We'll see what this year brings. We love Halloween around here!

I love the ideas. I have to say sometimes I am with you. The holiday comes and goes and I haven't thought of decorating or any fun activities. We are having family in town. I think I will try this! Thanks!

So cute! I've totally resurrected halloween too--great minds think alike. We'll have to mirror your great dinner--fun way to get them to eat veggies:) Such a fun collage layout--I haven't looked at blogs for several days...we're on the same page! We painted toes today too--but those are dang cute. I'm sure Mattie is in cousin heaven!

You've inspired me. I'm a Halloween grinch. I have good reasons, but I need to repent of them. Love the brain cupcakes. And I need to sit down with you and watch you create those digital scrapbook layouts! They're amazing.

I've told quite a few people about your the Halloween dinner you made for the kids, and everybody loved it. We had such a great time visiting, and Mattie is way missing her cousins!

Great idea! We usually watch a scary movie or something and hand out candy. I remember one year though we forgot to turn off the porch light and tricker treaters came to the door and we didn't have any candy left so we grabbed what was in the cupboard and handed them each a bag of microwave popcorn. I have never seen kids so excited! It was hilarious. Hee, Hee! But I think this year since we have our little girl, we are going to dress up as pumpkins and be a pumpkin patch family and head to church for a party. Well, I came across this website that I thought you might like. It has so many fun ideas for a halloween party. I like the graveyard cake. oooooh, I bet sherry can make a really cool spooky looking cake....

Oops... posted a comment on last blog... still catching up. I used to have trouble with the kids T or T-ing because we used to get beggers at our door everyday asking for food... Took me a few years to get over that. jan

I can't believe that my life is so chaotic right now that I can't even comment on this MOST IMPORTANT POST in a timely fashion. But my current insane life is for a good cause--Halloween. I loved these ideas of yours and am especially proud of your efforts, considering Halloween isn't your favorite. You definitely get extra credit for that. And holy cow girl--every time I check in you have been busy feathering your (blog) nest. It looks beeeyootiful. And very classy. You are one classy broad, Rebecca.

This is such a fun idea! I love it! I started a tradition last year (I guess it will only be a tradition if we in fact follow through again this year!) . . . I make stew in a pumpkin and have it Halloween night. It's warm, festive, and fills them with healthy food before the sugar-fest. As trick-or-treaters arrive, the parents come in and sit down for a bowl of delicious warm stew. It was really fun last year and a great way to bond with friends and neighbors who don't normally stop in for dinner.

Hey!
This is the first time I've been on your blog...LOVE it! I lived in Boston for 2 years and it's one of my favorite places ever. Looks like you and your family really know how to enjoy it too:)
I knew Wayne during our primary years back in So Cal. Our families did lots of fun things growing up too. Good to be in touch again, you have a beautiful family!!

I love this Becky. I think halloween is such a fun holiday, a weird one, but so fun. I love the fun dinner idea. I want to have a caramel apple party with friends, and eat lots of diff. kinds of decorated caramel apples. There are so many fun kinds to make these days. I gotta try those silly halloween foods though too.
