Last Friday my friend, Allison & I made the trek into Boston to load up on fruits, veggies & herbs at the Boston Haymarket.
We got some great deals & had fun rewarding ourselves with cannolis from Mike's Pastry (LOVED the one with the peanut brittle shell) & Modern Pastry (filled fresh- YUM!)...both shops are found on Hanover St. nearly across the street from each other. Allison & I felt obligated to do a taste test to compare cannolis from each pastry shop so we can add our 2 cents to the "which is better, Mike's or Modern?" debate. According to our "expert" opinion, the ricotta fillings were quite similar....both were excellent...very helpful, I know! I still say a cannoli from either place is better than birthday cake. What do you think...Mike's or Modern? Not in Boston? Where do you go for a good Italian Pastry?

and YUM it was!!!! Let's do it again soon!
I want to go.....I LOVE Farmers Markets! We hope to make a trip back there soon! We have some die hard Boston fans in our home!
Wow that looks like it was so fun! I love Boston, and I do love me some Modern Bakery! When I am craving a cannoli down here in FL, I go to a little Italian restaurant by one of the movie theaters. They're not nearly as good, but they still do the trick!
YUMMMMMMMMM....I really want to be there with you guys! (okay except for the meaty skulls in the case!) I can't believe that I never went there...I never felt like dragging kids around it. You guys did it the RIGHT way!
I think it's pretty remarkable you've been in Boston for over a decade and you don't have a Boston accent..I say good for you! What a lovely morning and fun little getaway in your own backyard. I don't think you took me to modern bakery or to any of those cannoli places when I was there! Guess I'll have to come back! And what do people do with those skulls anyhow--are they just for show? Or do they make skull soup?
Shayla, SO sorry we didn't stop for a cannoli when you were here. Yes, you must come back!
You were onto something with the cow's head... cow head soup or a version of barbacoa. Recipe found here.... http://www.texasbarbeques.com/barbacoa_recipes.html
I dare you to give it a try!!!
Alright, I went and check out your recipe. I looked at the ingredients and thought no problem I can do this and then moved on to the directions where it says remove the eyes, ears and tongue YUCK! Don't know if I can do that. I guess we can have the YM take care of that part :-)
Last night at Chipoltle's I had a Josh had a barbacoa beef burrito. Do you think he really ate cow head?
I wish we had a farmers market like that one here in Vegas! I would go all the time! But here in Vegas, for a delicious Italian pastry (that I've tried thus far)would be the "Chocolate Calzone" from Claim Jumpers. Mmmmmmmmm!
Btw, I love reading your Quotables! They are so cute. I can't wait tell Juliana starts talking cause I always wonder what she is jabbering about. It sounds like she would have a lot to say. I just wonder what she thinks of her kooky parents!
You are making me so homesick for Boston! I wish we still lived there, except for the winters. We know the owner of Modern Pastry, so we're kind of partial to them. Go and eat a florentine cookie for me! We will have to come visit sometime to do all the great stuff like Haymarket.
Definitely florentine cannolis from Mike's Pastry! I still get cravings for those. You're making me want to come to Boston and make a trip to Haymarket!
I'm a fan of both Mike's and Modern but Mike's is open later which works out for those late-night cravings for dessert. I discovered I could make it to Mike's in 15 minutes if needed.
<---- I vote for Mikes.
(I love the pushing and cutting in line to get to the front. And those fancy string holder thingys hanging from the ceiling.)
